Concert tonight at Meadowood Shores

Thank you all so much for the wonderful concerts you gave on Saturday. For me, it was one of the greatest experiences with the choir so far! You sang beautifully and with great emotion....the spirit there was incredible! Thank you!

Just a reminder to meet at Meadowood Shores tonight at 7:00 PM. We will be singing everything on the program except "O Come O Come Emmanuel". We will even try to sneak in "Nutcracker Jingles" as a fun piece. Don't forget your Christmas sweaters!!! Families are welcome! Friends too! :)

Directions:
1. Go north on Silver Lake Road from 694.
2. Pass Rice Creek Road
3. Turn left after Taco John's (there is a white sign with green letters that says, "Meadowood Shores".)
4. Go straight until you see the three story building. There should be enough parking for everyone. If not, you can park at Snyders.

Official Concert Order!!!

Here's what you've all been waiting for, the official order of music for the concerts! Please put your music in this order - our remaining rehearsals will follow this order except for "Carols of the Night" and the viola pieces. A few pieces below are in italics as I'm not sure if they'll definitely be on the program...#5 and #6 aren't quite ready and #10 is waiting final approval.

You are an OUTSTANDING choir!!! Many people have said that we could be charging quite a bit for our concerts b/c of your quality musicianship. What a compliment! I hope this next statement is not understood as 'self-righteous' but it's wonderful to be part of a talented choral group that sings with a spirit of love and unity and whose mission is to testify of the Gospel of Jesus Christ (and that gives free concerts!). Thank you all for your hard work and sacrifice to be part of this choir! Please also express my gratitude to your families for their incredible sacrifice as well!

The MinneMoCho

I was talking to Jon Kirkham this morning and he casually called us The MinneMoCho...here's a tag: "your morning cup of coffee in music" or "it's not the latest caffeinated beverage from Caribou, it's a choir!". Any other tag lines? Seeing as we don't drink coffee, I'm thinking we'll have to CAN this idea......thanks anyway Jon! :)

10/22 Rehearsal, Special Guest and MORE!

SPECIAL GUEST THIS THURSDAY!
Loren Squires, the director of the South Metro Chorale, will be coming to our rehearsal to assist in the men's sectional (Chuck is away this week)and to invite us on their choir tour to Croatia.

TARDIES AND ABSENCES:
I'm sorry to do it but we've got to crack down on tardies and absences. Please review the member's guide for the policy. Many people are not writing down if they are late. To clarify, if you come in after choir gets started (yes, even during prayer, spotlight, warm-ups, etc), you are late. Regarding absences, you may not miss more than 2 rehearsals per major concert unless approved by the director. If you have missed 2, you need to attend a make-up rehearsal.

MAKE-UP REHEARSAL:
Thursday, November 5th from 6:00 - 6:45 or 9:00 - 9:45 pm. If you have missed 2 rehearsals for ANY reason, you MUST be there.

MMC PHOTO DIRECTORY:
Brian Hewitt is putting a photo directory together. There are 3 ways you can give him a photo:
1. Send him an e-mail with a digital image - blhewitt@frontiernet.net
2. Bring a photo to practice with your name on the back and give it to him at choir practice.
3. See him before choir, during break or after practice and he will take a picture to put in the directory.

SAYING GOODBYE IS NEVER EASY:
After a wonderful couple of rehearsals with "This Christmastide" it is time to bid adieu until another year. Those of you who have been around for a while know that I like to have a surplus of music each semester. It's fun to sing through pieces and find the perfect ones for our choir. I think this one is perfect but given our time restraints, we won't be singing it this time around.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE:
Sectionals
Women - Gloria
Men - Balulalow, Once in Royal David's City
Here We Come a-caroling

I'd rather sing than speak....

I'm not great at interviewing....or speaking! This is not modesty...I'm just stating a fact! I told the newspaper writer that I'd rather sing a song but she didn't go for it. Below is an interview I gave about the MN Mormon Chorale. There are a few things that I'm working on getting changed but just thought you might like to read about the attention the choir has received lately. -Erin

Just a reminder that this week's rehearsal is at the Institute building.

PLEASE BE IN CONCERT DRESS AND READY TO WALK OVER TO THE PHOTO SHOOT BY 6:45 PM.

We will only have about 15-20 minutes to take pictures since it's getting darker earlier these days. You can park at the Institute or on the street nearby....there is no parking on University Ave.

Here is a link to the Institute:

Congratulations! Other notes

Congratulations!
Congratulations on an OUTSTANDING performance last Friday night! It was soooooooo much fun! Thank you for your energy - it really helps!

"All, Your last concert was one of the most entertaining Janet and I have ever attended. Congratulations. Bruce Nelson"

Shortened Rehearsal Thursday
This week's rehearsal will go from 7:00-8:30 pm. You deserve a week off but I'm afraid we have some logistical things to work out this Thursday (where to stand - seating will be changed to reflect the SATB formation we had at the Crystal building, line up, sit, etc.) and there are some spots that could use some tweaking as this concert will be RECORDED.

Publicity
We need your help with getting the word out about this week's concert. We expected the attendance at Minneapolis to be less than usual since it was the first time we performed there. Let's make sure we fill the seats at New Brighton as we usually do! Email, FB, Phone call, flyers are all great resources!

Recording our History
Bring your cameras Friday night! If any of you have pictures taken at the concerts and/or rehearsals, please send them to me and I'll post them.
Our AMAZING Accompanists!

Picnic
There is going to be a picnic on Saturday from 11-1 at my house. Molly sent out assignments via e-mail.

It's FINALLY here!

Hooooraaayyyyyy! It's cool to see "1 day" on the countdown widget! Here are some notes for tonight:

  • REMEMBER: We're at the Crystal building (2801 Douglas Dr N, Crystal, MN) for rehearsal (7-9:30 pm).
  • Men, please go straight to the chapel to rehearse with Susan S. and Fred Larson (clarinet) on "The Pasture".
  • Women, please go to the RS room or another available room with piano to rehearse with Susan Quick. The runs on "Praise to the Lord" are still a bit messy. Please make them more light and bouncy.
  • Jon Kirkham is bringing the programs so we can look over them to see if any changes need to be made.
  • The set-up is quite different so we'll be changing the seating. Will have a new seating chart at rehearsal.
  • The first part of rehearsal, we'll be rehearsing certain spots in pieces. Then, we'll have a run-through (with hopefully minimal stopping/starting).
  • Call time is 6:00 pm - that means all responsibilities are taken care of BEFORE that time and you're up on the stand ready to go! :)

Thanks for your hard work! You guys ROCK!

I'd like to ask the octet (who sang LW #11 on Thursday) to sing "LW #9" this Thursday - if all goes well, we will have them sing #9 in the concert (I think the entire choir should sing #11 to end the piece) - anyone have strong feelings against this? Theory class

First of all, I feel bad about taking the top of the blog for this announcement, so make sure you scroll down to get the homework assignment for this week!

The final theory class of the semester will be next week on April 16. I expect you'll all be relieved that your taxes are done, so bring along a bag dinner and come to theory class! We'll be talking about the physics of sound, the harmonic series, and equal temperament. Even if you don't recognize any of those terms, or haven't been to any theory classes before, this one will be an exciting one that stands on its own. I will have some of my instruments there, including the infamous tromba marina.

6:15 in the Primary room, April 16. See you there!

4/9 Rehearsal Homework! Only 5 more to go!

Great rehearsal Thursday! Things are coming along and it's going to be an awesome concert! Did you hear what President Monson said yesterday afternoon? I don't remember his exact words but he thanked those with musical abilities for sharing them. Music brings the Spirit, uplifts the soul and communicates things that words often cannot. Anyways, I was really hoping you all heard that! You are soooooo appreciated!!!

This week's schedule follows the past 2 rehearsal schedules so I'm going to post specific things you need to work on BEFORE Thursday.

Announcements:
1. Easter Party - We're having a party this week after rehearsal! Altos, please don't forget your treats!
2. Make Up Rehearsal on April 23rd for those who have missed 2 rehearsals.
3. Concert Publicity: Start getting the word out about the concerts (e-mail, join FaceBook, etc.)! Remember, this is the first time we'll be performing at the Minneapolis Stake Center so we'll need to build up our audience.

Homework:
1. Jesus Christ the Apple Tree: Slight lean on important words/ syllables. Dynamic contrast between verses 3 & 4. What do these verses mean to you?

2. The Pasture: KNOW your part in mm. 31-35. Practice singing the piece legato with a slight emphasis on first syllable or important words. Baritones MUST have the following measures PERFECT: mm. 15-17, mm. 31-35. (Remember, you're talking to your toddler son who really wants to go with you but is too young and falls asleep as you comfort him).

3. Johnny Schmoker: Memorize! Be able to sing backwards and forwards since you really have to in this piece!

4. Praise to the Lord: KNOW all notes from mm. 115 to end.

5. Over the Rainbow: KNOW your note where you come in at m. 11. Measures 22 and 24 need to be much more legato (phrasing needs to be like a real rainbow!). Measure 43-48 also need to be more legato - b/c of the way they are written, there is a tendency to sing them choppy but WE SHALL OVERCOME! :) Watch notes/dynamics at mm. 49-50.

6. Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit: Stay excited! Keep your energy focused and don't let the tempo or pitch sag. Sopranos: your 'E' on "Pray" at the end of the piece needs some more energy! Sadly, the pitch Sagged causing the Spirit to Scurry! :)

7. Sing Creations Music On: Work on the timing (myself included!).

8. Loch Lomond: Work on your Scottish accent. I heard a rumor that the men are not sounding very Scottish. Hmmmm....do we need to make you wear plaid skirts, men? Anyone interested in the solo?

9. Liebeslieder Walzer: Emphasis on the first beat to keep the waltz feeling and emphasize the first syllable of words - cross out the second syllable if that helps. Be ready to sing through all of the LW's!!!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to some changes in guest performers, we are having to change the program around a bit. A new concert order will be posted shortly. We will not be singing "Promise of Living" or "Come to my Garden" but I do promise they'll be on a future program.

Monday, March 30, 2009

"A whole new world...." (insert Jasmine's voice)

Why didn't I do this sooner? This past week, I went to the ACDA National Convention in Oklahoma and one of the presentations was on technology and how helpful BLOGS can be to the choir as well as those interested in the choir.
You're probably all thinking, "Duh!" but it was an exciting moment for me as I realized all the cool things we can do with this blog. It's BRILLIANT! I'll be able to post announcements, helpful resources, rehearsal notes, etc. (without sending so many e-mails). I could jump for joy! Ok, I would but I'm afraid it'll hurt. :)
